Velt vöngum með Bjarna

Hefðbundið er (vinstrið iðkaði það lengi) að demónísera þá sem sitja við kjötkatlana. Hluti þeirra er vissulega að maka krókinn á kostnað annarra algerlega meðvitað, en hluti af vandanum er kerfislægur.

Ég var að lesa póst frá honum Said á síðu Alberts í morgun, þar sem hann byrtir grein sem fjallar um að allt vinstrið/miðjan (=fulltrúar fyrir almenning) er orðið svo upptekið af því að (vera grænt) vera skynsamt og hófstillt og skilningsríkt að hægri vargarnir, sem eru agressífir, ganga á lagið.  Þetta er algerlega í línu við það sem ég/við höfum talað um.

Málið er að á meðan við höfum flokkakerfi og viljum að það virki þá verðum við að hafa það konfrontational og flokkar þurfa að ota tota umbjóðenda sinna af hörku og einbeini (sbr. Sanders og Warren sjá neðan) en að halda að hægt sé að drífa flokkapólitík með grænu eða gulu siðferði, það er það sem er dæmt til að mislukkast og verða sú katastofa sem fæðir af sér Trumpa. Sem sagt, ef við höfum flokkakefi (træbal og zero-sum game) þá verður pólitíkin að starfa eftir því ef hún á að vera fúnksjónal og ekki að verða rauð-bláu harðjöxlunum algerlega að bráð.  Íslensk póltík er full af dæmum um að þetta er svona. Björt framtíð var fullkomlega andvana fædd – hún er holdgerfingur þessara “vinalegu” “skilningsríku” stjórnmála og það eina sem gat bjargað þeim frá gjöreyðingu var gamaldags hörð hagsmunapólitík (engir helvítis samninar!) þegar þau neituðu að taka þátt í kurteisinni allri í kringum búvörulögin.

This article is right in saying centrist only know the language of compromise, by-partisanship and trans-partisanship. All Green feel-good stuff that doesn’t recognize the danger building on the other side.

Centrism (for now) is dead. A shift to an angry Left needs to happen with the democrats (or a birth of a whole new party) if we want to stop the right zealot-ideologues with their arrested views from defining the future of this country.

I, however hold no hope that the Democrats (based on the recent DNC leadership battle) really understand what they have to do. Anger about the issues that matter and are being defined by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren is what they need, not beating the old dead horse of inter-party politics of my-diversity-can beat-your-diversity while the country falls deeper into the grip of the radical Alt-right.

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something,” the old Upton Sinclair adage goes, “when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.” Such is the dilemma of the professional centrist. Like the suppression of climate science in the fossil fuel industry, the readily available evidence of asymmetric polarization is taboo among centrists. To recognize and fully grapple with it threatens the livelihood, the essential raison d’être, of the centrist. For the centrist must maintain equivalence and balanced criticism toward both sides, and acknowledging a higher degree of extremism on one side would undermine their bipartisan credentials.

Indeed, partisanship is the partner the centrist cannot live with or without. On one hand, their position requires at least some prospect of bipartisan collaboration in order to maintain relevance. On the other hand, their position depends entirely on a polarized two-party structure; they exist in relationship to the parties.

What is required now is broad recognition that centrists cannot resolve our deepening crisis. Structurally, they are too dependent on the … party system and its false equivalency. Intellectually, they suffer from a poverty of imagination. Philosophically, they have few core commitments. And temperamentally, they are too milquetoast, lacking one of the most essential traits for such a moment: political courage.

“Either you stand up for your principles and for what you know is decent behaviour, or you go down, if not now, then years from now, as a coward or opportunist.”

First and foremost is a return to fundamentals.

The imperative of resistance now goes far beyond party affiliation or ideology — it has become a civic duty for everyone who still believes in (welfare society).
